Auto repair in the United States is split between independent shops, dealership service departments and national chains. Independents handle most routine work (oil changes, brakes, tune-ups, check-engine diagnostics) at lower labor rates and often specialize in one make or in imports; dealers keep factory tools, software and warranty authority; chains sell speed and standard pricing on maintenance items. Most shops charge a diagnostic fee, credited toward the repair if you go ahead, and quote parts and labor separately. Certification matters: look for ASE-certified technicians and, in many states, a state repair license posted at the counter. Written estimates are required by law in most states before work begins, and you are entitled to your old parts if you ask.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Avondale Auto Repair — Honest, Reliable & Great Communication 🚗🔧 I’ve been bringing my vehicles to Avondale Auto Repair in Chicago for years for mechanical repairs and maintenance, but this was my first time trusting them with a major auto body and collision repair. They did an excellent job. My 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road, which I call Gojira 🦖, was damaged after being hit by a drunk driver. Dealing with the other driver’s insurance company took weeks and eventually months, but Nabor, Sammy, Nathan, and the Avondale Auto Repair team stayed involved and kept me updated throughout the entire process. One of the biggest reasons I recommend this shop is their communication. I regularly received texts and phone calls explaining what they were waiting for, what they had discussed with insurance, and when they needed me to follow up. That kind of communication is rare and made a stressful situation much easier. When I got my RAV4 back, it looked beautiful again. 🚙✨ The body work and collision repair came out excellent, everything looked factory-correct, and the vehicle drove perfectly. I also appreciate that Avondale Auto Repair is a local independent Chicago auto repair sho

I just want to share my experience so that others don't end up in the same situation that I was in. I brought my car in on a Wednesday for an overheating engine and a leak. They were really bad at providing updates, and it took longer than anticipated. I was quoted for $2200 to fix a water pump leak and a noisy alternator. Not even a week goes by and my check engine light comes on. I call and they say to bring it in, but it might be a few days before they can look at it. The day I bring it in for the second repair, the engine overheats again. I am now told I need 4 spark plugs to be replaced. That was never suggested or mentioned in their initial diagnosis. When I asked why that wasn't caught in the first place, I was told that they looked at them in the initial diagnosis, and it was just normal wear and tear within the week that caused this new issue. Not only did I have to pay an additional $900 for this repair, but I needed a rental car since the service is so slow. I was told someone would reach out to me to better explain what happened, but so far no one has.

Took my car in to have breaks and tires looked at before a long road trip (I notified them of this. They told my husband that I never told them that. Funny because Kevin asked where I was going…). Appointment was at 11am. 2 days later, I get my car back. Couldn’t get the tires done because they didn’t have them in stock. Cool. Went to another tire shop and they couldn’t get the tires off because the lug nuts were put on too tightly. I mean: They got them off at Avondale. Had to have 2 new studs put in because they were so stripped. Don’t go here.

I had my car serviced by them a couple days ago , I really wanna give a shout out to Luis and Nathan they were really helpful and professional. I was having a hard time doing a diagnostic on my car from the a/c and they saved me from a year long headache . Luis was really professional and very detailed in his work and well spoken and allowing me to see the issue with him on my vehicle . I would come back here again for any car troubles I can’t thank them enough for their honesty..something you don’t find in shops very often , It was my first time to get a repair done at a shop and probably will stick to this place ! Their inspections are incredibly detailed providing photos and videos about my car .Couldn’t have asked for a better inspection , thank you Luis ! Got my car throwing that ice cold ❄️ I truly recommend this place :)

I can’t say enough great things about Avondale Auto Repair, Nathan, Rick and their staff. As a first-time customer, I came in with what I thought was a simple issue—my 2017 Toyota RAV4 key fob suddenly stopped working. I’d replaced the battery before, so I tried that again… nothing. My (very mechanically inclined) husband tried too—still nothing. That kicked off the search for a replacement, and wow—what a frustrating experience. The dealership quoted me $600 to replace and program a new key. Automotive locksmiths were all over the place—$180, $250—and the whole process felt vague and transactional, like you couldn’t get a straight answer without jumping through hoops. Then I found Avondale Auto Repair through the Costco Auto Program—and everything changed. Rick answered the phone, and within seconds I felt reassured. He was straightforward, knowledgeable, and refreshingly honest. Instead of trying to sell me something, he explained the pros and cons—how aftermarket keys often don’t last, and how they source directly from the dealer but can usually save customers about $100. No pressure. Just real, helpful information. When I came in, that same feeling continued. The shop itsel
